Arizona DPS Launches First Tucson S.T.A.R. Program
Last week, the Arizona Department of Public Safety hosted its first-ever Tucson session of the STEM Training & Application in Real World Public Safety (S.T.A.R.) program. The event took place from June 2 to June 4, 2025, and welcomed eight high school students between the ages of 16 and 18 from across Arizona.
During the three-day program, the students learned about how science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are used in public safety careers. Participants observed demonstrations conducted by several specialty units, including Highway Patrol, Motorcycle Patrol, Canine units, SWAT, Explosive Ordnance Disposal, the State Gang Task Force, Hazmat, Biometrics, the Vehicle Theft Task Force, Vehicular Crimes, Unmanned Aircraft Systems/drones, Operational Communications, and Aviation operations.
At the conclusion of the program on June 4, each student received a certificate of completion to acknowledge their participation. The Arizona Fraternal Order of Police sponsored lunches, and support was provided by all the units that contributed time and expertise to make the program possible.
For more information about the S.T.A.R. program or AZDPS internship opportunities, interested persons are encouraged to email internships@azdps.gov.
