Boise State Shines at Civil Engineering Symposium
Boise State University civil engineering students returned on April 12 from the American Institute of Steel Construction and American Society of Civil Engineers Intermountain Southwest Student Symposium with several honors. The group, consisting of 43 students and three advisors, spent three days in Tucson, Arizona, competing in events that included concrete bowling ball, concrete discus, concrete canoe, sustainable solutions, timber strong, and steel bridge competitions. In each event, students designed, built, and tested various civil engineering projects.
The student teams earned placements in every competition and received the Spirit Bell award, which was given by their peers to recognize their good sportsmanship and teamwork. Boise State was noted as one of the few schools with teams made up of students who were not senior capstone students. Many of these students had not yet taken junior-level courses in structural, environmental, or materials engineering. They participated in the symposium to learn and grow, with guidance from faculty and industry mentors.
